A question which is often asked is "how can I get a map of .... into
my GPSr?" The "official" answer is, of course, "You have no
alternative but to buy it from Magellan". However, there is another
way - either make a map yourself, or get it from someone who has made
one.
The Yahoo "mobilemapper" group has developed the tools for making
your own maps. But be warned - like marriage, this is something "not
to be entered into lightly of inadvisably"! The process is
complicated and time-consuming, and requires above-average computer
skills.
The program which makes this all possible is Mobile Mapper Office
(MMO), which is available as a free download on Magellan's website.
It produces maps which (after a little "tweaking") can either be
loaded directly into the Magellan, or combined with other maps using
the MapSend software.
MMO can only accept input in a "vector" format, so as a first stage
the original map needs to be converted into this format. This can be
done in two ways: a) a "bitmap" image (from a scanned map or off the
web) can be converted to a vector image using one of several
utilities, or
a map can be hand-drawn, by tracing over tracks,
routes or lines on an image. All of the necessary programs can be
downloaded for free, although if you buy a program which
does "georeferencing" (i.e. adding latitude and longitude to the
vector files), you can make life a whole lot easier! If you think
you might be interested in doing this, have a look at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mobilemapper. At the moment most of
the discussion is on adding points of interest (POI's) to maps, but
the archive and the filestore contain plenty of information about
making uploadable maps.
